“On Monday, January 27 a group of patients, advocates and researchers will meet to talk to NYS government representatives about the importance of reinstating funding for spinal cord research,” says Dr. Sally Temple. Scientists from the Neural Stem Cell Institute will join Dr. Temple in her support of New Yorkers to Cure Paralysis Lobby Day at the Empire State Convention Center in Albany on Monday. Advocacy in needed to re-enforce the 1998 NYS law created to direct $8.5 million funds of $150 million generated annually from a surcharge on moving vehicle violations, to spinal cord research. During 2010, the monies were taken from the program to offset state deficits. Proponents of the law are asking that the funds are reinstated. Dr. Temple underscores the seriousness of the situation, “It’s the law. We are asking to uphold the current law for the full $8.5 million funding to be reinstated going forward.” She explains that spinal cord injury research will not only help those suffering, but can potentially help individuals suffering from paralysis due to stroke and other diseases of the central nervous system.
